Matt's Practice Plans

Matt Calllahan is a USSF "B" Licensed coach who has been working on complete practice plans for several years and has allowed us to post about 100 of them on our website in order to help other coaches. They are posted on-line at  http://www.nasl.com/drills/MattsPlans.htm

The practices are divided into four types:

  • Youth - age appropriate practices for children U12, U10, U8 and U6 and under
  • Technical - to teach different skills of the game such as passing, receiving, finishing, etc.
  • Tactical - How to make better decisions
  • Functional - what the player's roles are within the game (what is the role of a midfield playmaker, how can we effectively play the ball out of the back with four backs, how can we play from the middle third of the field to the final third).

These practice plans are appropriate for new and old coaches of all age teams. They are posted at  http://www.nasl.com/drills/MattsPlans.htm and are now part of the largest free source of soccer drills, exercises, tips and articles available on the internet at http://www.nasl.com/drills.htm  These articles are the reason that Forbes Magazine selected the NASL.com website as one of the ten best soccer websites in the world.

Important Notes for NASL Teams for the Fall Season:

No corner flags, no play.

Fields MUST have corner flags. It is the responsibility of the home team to provide corner flags. If the home team can not provide them within 15 minutes of the start time of the match, then it is listed as a “no show” match. If flags are secured within the 15 minutes grace time, then the match is played with out a deduction in time.

No passes, No Play.

NASL matches - If a team shows up without coach or player passes, the offending team (the one without the passes) will pay the entire match's referee fees on the field at that time. If they refuse to pay, then the referees will contact Pat Miller and Mike Costello at NASOA and submit a report. It is the home team’s responsibility to inform the out of town teams of this issue. This is for NASL matches only.  State matches require passes also but referee fees are not paid on the field.

Rule Change - Mandatory Caution for removing shirt

Law change for 2004, it is a mandatory caution if a player raises his/her shirt above the head or takes off the shirt in a celebratory/derogatory manner.

Alabama Sports Foundation and UAB to host U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Soccer Team

(BIRMINGHAM, AL)… The Alabama Sports Foundation and the University of Alabama at Birmingham Men’s Soccer Program is pleased to announce that the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Soccer Team will be traveling to Birmingham to play a couple of exhibition matches this month. The nationally-ranked UAB Men’s Soccer Team will play the United States U-17 Team on Friday, August 27 at 8:00 pm at UAB’s West Campus Field. On Sunday, August 29, Auburn University at Montgomery will compete against the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team at 1:00 pm which will also be hosted at UAB’s West Campus Field.

General admission tickets are available beginning Monday, August 9 through UAB’s Athletic Ticket Office or by calling 975-UAB1. A weekend ticket package is available, which includes a general admission ticket to both matches for just $10. General admission tickets to a single match are $7. UAB’s West Campus Field has limited seating so fans are encouraged to secure their tickets early.

The Alabama Sports Foundation has been a regular host to U.S. Soccer Teams since the 1996 Olympics. “We’re extremely excited to be hosting another quality soccer event in Birmingham and continuing our outstanding relationship with the U.S. Soccer Federation,” said Gene Hallman, Executive Director of the Alabama Sports Foundation. “We are looking forward to working with UAB to provide the soccer community a positive experience,” Hallman added.

“This is a great opportunity for the UAB Men’s Soccer Team to showcase our program to Birmingham and the soccer community,” said Mike Getman, Coach of UAB Men’s Soccer. “The U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team will provide excellent competition and a great test for our team as we prepare for the upcoming season. We anticipate a great deal of interest and participation from the community and encourage fans to purchase their tickets now due to our limited seating,” added Getman.

Ronaldinho vs. Zidane

This is REQUIRED viewing for all young soccer players. It's a movie of soccer stars Ronaldinho vs. Zidane - a comparison of two of the greatest soccer players in the world - both #10s. It is one of the best videos I have seen of dribbling moves and shooting skills. It's a huge (24 meg) file so if you have a slow connection find someone with a dsl or cable connection and get them to burn a copy of it on a cd for you. It's definitely worth viewing and may give you an idea of just how creative you can be with a soccer ball. Click on the link and be patient.

September is Youth Soccer Month!

Show Your Support of Youth Soccer Month
Encourage Family, Fun, Fitness and Friendship this September

(RICHARDSON, Texas) August 16, 2004 - In September 2004, the National Youth Soccer Month campaign celebrates its second year of educating the public about the joys, rewards and benefits of playing youth soccer, and offers a variety of resources to learn more about youth soccer and how to get involved. U.S. Women's Olympic legend, Kristine Lilly is the official spokesperson of Youth Soccer Month.
"I am really proud to be part of Youth Soccer Month. Soccer has always been a part of my life and has given me so much," said Lilly. "Soccer has shown me how to work with others, be a leader, have fun, and to push myself and be the best player and person I can be."
We hope you and your organization will join us in September and all year as we reach out to the millions of soccer enthusiasts throughout the United States with our messages about youth soccer and the many advantages of the sport.
We hope that you will choose a unique way to celebrate soccer in September and spread the message about your positive experiences. By taking part, you can play an active role in communicating the benefits of youth soccer across America.

GOALS OF YOUTH SOCCER MONTH
  • Raise awareness of Youth Soccer and the benefits of playing the game.
  • Emphasize soccer as the number one youth participation sport in America and a leading contributor to the healthy lifestyle of millions of American families.
  • Bring kids and families of all ages and all abilities together for fun, friendship and fitness.
  • Highlight the various programs available to children interested in participating in soccer, including inner city, special needs, recreational and elite soccer programs.

The four messages of Youth Soccer Month are:

  • Fitness: The health and fitness (physical, psychological and social) benefits of playing soccer.
  • Friendship: The relationships and fun generated through playing soccer and their extension beyond the field.
  • Family: Playing soccer ties families together as schedules, vacations and family time are coordinated.
  • Fun: Whether recreational or competitive in nature, involvement in soccer is easy, affordable and rewarding.

GET INVOLVED

Anyone can spread the message about his or her positive experience with youth soccer. Youth Soccer Month celebrations can be found at soccer practices and tournaments, businesses, nonprofit and community centers, shopping malls, schools, private homes, just about anywhere that kids who play soccer and those involved may gather. People who organize Youth Soccer Month Celebrations are people like yourself: soccer volunteers and administrators, parents, coaches, players, anyone who wants to celebrate our sport.
Show your support by adding the Youth Soccer Month logo to your web site and outgoing emails. Link the Youth Soccer Month logo to www.YouthSoccerMonth.org to educate others on how to get involved and celebrate Youth Soccer in their own unique way. Various formats of the Youth Soccer Month logo are available for download on the web site.
We want to hear how people participate in Youth Soccer Month this year. Click here to tell us how you will get involved and celebrate Youth Soccer in America. Be sure to visit YouthSoccerMonth.org often during September to see what's going on across the country.

UNIROYAL® TIRE LAUNCHES YOUTH SOCCER SWEEPSTAKES

Register To Win a Free Clinic With U.S.A. Team Captain Julie Foudy

GREENVILLE, S.C. July 13, 2004 -- How often do today’s youth soccer players have the chance to learn from one of the world’s top professionals? Tomorrow’s future Olympians will now have a chance to attend a free soccer clinic with U.S.A.Team Captain Julie Foudy through the “Uniroyal® Tire Julie Foudy Clinic Sweepstakes.”

This fall, Uniroyal Tire will award one lucky winner’s child and his/her youth soccer team a free three-hour clinic to be coached by U.S. National Soccer Team Captain, Julie Foudy. Uniroyal will give a lucky winner and his/her team a chance to learn directly from one of the top stars in U.S. professional soccer. In addition to the grand prize, Uniroyal Tire will award soccer balls autographed by Foudy to 100 first-prize winners.

To enter, parents must register their child and his/her soccer team at www.uniroyal.com/sweeps. Contest ends on October 31, 2004.

“This sweepstakes promotion is a great way for Uniroyal Tire to reach out to youth soccer and its players,” explained Tim Jamison, Uniroyal brand director. “Julie is a fantastic role model for kids and their parents alike and she represents the best in U.S. athletics and truly exemplifies the word ‘professional’.”

“I love working with young kids on the soccer field,” explained Foudy. “This sweepstakes will create so much excitement with the local leagues and is just one example of how Uniroyal has supported the sport both on and off the field.”

Foudy, captain of Team U.S.A. that will be playing for the red, white and blue this summer in Athens, Greece, has worked with Uniroyal Tire for five years. During that time, she has helped generate public awareness of Uniroyal’s support of the game of soccer and has worked with local tire dealers to promote the game with local leagues. In total, Foudy has assisted Uniroyal Tire and its dealers in donating nearly $5 million in equipment and funds to more than 1,200 youth soccer organizations across the country.

Free Help for Coaches

Since January I have been moving thousands of drills, tips, articles and exercises from my old website at DecaturSports.com to the NASL website in an effort to make the NASL website the largest repository of help for soccer coaches on the internet.  The DecaturSports.com website was one of only two website recommended by NSCAA for youth coaches at their annual convention. Since the DecaturSports.com website covered many sports I felt it was important to place this wealth of soccer material on the NASL website which is soccer only.
There are articles on virtually every topic that ever interested soccer coaches and for coaches from newly drafted dads and moms to USSF "A" Licensed coaches.  Recently added were on-line videos of all the Coerver moves and the Gary Rue's Exercises of the Day.  This is a year long project for me and I still have many, many  more to post so let me know if there is anything in particular you would like to see and I'll get it posted first.
Stop by http://www.nasl.com/drills.htm and look around and I think you will agree that it is the finest selection of soccer coaching material on the internet.  Ken dsports@hiwaay.net

NASL NEWSLETTER:

You may sign up for the NASL e-mail list and also provide changes (including removing your name from the list) to your current e-mail address and phone numbers by using this form at  http://www.nasl.com/Email.htm This is our means of keeping the local soccer community up-to-date on events and items of interest.  If you have something to contribute please e-mail me at dsports@hiwaay.net

REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS

This low-tech emailing list is maintained for the benefit of coaches, referees, and parents involved in youth soccer in Alabama. List maintenance is semi-automatic. No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced!
If you are no longer in Alabama or wish to be removed from this list for any reason, simply send an e-mail to dsports@hiwaay.net with "Delete", "Remove", "Exclude", "Unsubscribe", "Stop!", No More!, "Cease and Desist!", or something similar in the subject line. Regional dialects, colloquialisms, and various misspellings (e.g., Cut it out!, Delist, Unlist, Disenfranchise, Quit me, Unsuscribe [sic], Unsuscripe [sic], Describe, and Unscribe) are understood.
"Drop Dead, Pond Scum" works also, although emails with profanity (e.g, Go to He!!) will be filtered out and automatically discarded so that the youth players who volunteer in the NASL office won't see them. Other requests, particularly those that include the word me (e.g., Drop me, Terminate me, Cut me or worse, Cut me off, Take me off, Purge me, Reject me, Take me down, Expunge me, Take me out, and Kill me) are cause for concern but are generally implemented figuratively rather than literally.
Tense, gender, and grammar (e.g., Please removed us/we/him/her.) are irrelevant. Some requests (e.g., Enscribe and Obscribe) confuse us and may result in additional contact. Manners (e.g., Please, Sorry, and Thank you, anyway.) are optional.
Explanations (e.g., I visited Huntsville once on the way to the Calaveras Frog Jumping Contest and loved looking at the space museum, but I have never lived in Northern Alabama.) are always interesting and are appreciated.
Sporting metaphors (e.g., I don't want to play on your team.) help soften the blow. Denials (e.g., There is no one here who plays soccer. or We hate that game.) mean we entered someone's email address incorrectly. We're used to but politely disagree with gender stereotyping (e.g, Real men play pointy football. and Soccer is a man's game, not a game for skirts). Questions (e.g., How did you get my email address?) generally can't be answered because nobody in the NASL office knows the answers to them.
Your email address and all other alias email addresses that you include in the body of your request will automatically be added to NASL's Exclude List. This will permanently stop delivery of all types of future NASL announcements, including those for upcoming tryouts, coaching or refereeing courses, refereeing opportunities for league and tournament games, and birthday parties. You can also quit yourself from NASL's e-mail page at http://www.nasl.com/Email.htm
If you need a reply please e-mail me at dsports@hiwaay.net and request a reply.  I'll get back to you as soon as possible unless you're selling adult toys, growth hormones or offering to share the wealth that you and your family were barely able to smuggle out of Nigeria; those messages will not get replies.

NOTE: The wonderful removal instructions listed above were adapted with permission from Michael Lindeburg at San Andreas Youth Soccer Organization, http://www.sayso.org
